Critica et philologica

Published on 2006 by Peeters Publishers

The Successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meets for a week once every four years in Oxford and is held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world, and the papers presented reflect this global representation. Chronologically and topically, the papers range from the second century to the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events and the like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. Each set is provided with an index, an invaluable index of references to the individual Fathers and each of their works. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigor and popularity of the subjects. Includes studies on the Eucharist in Early Roman Basilicas, Sex and Holy Communion in Late Antiquity, Kissing, Purity, and Early Christian Social Order, The Domestic Origin of the Liturgy of the Word, An Examination of Christian Semiotics, The Theological Background of Iconoclastic Church Programmes, The Metaphor of Imaging from the Second to Fourth Centuries, Irenaeus on Gnostic Biblical Interpretation, Tatian's Use of Speech and Fire Metaphors, The Rhetoric of Conversion and the Construction of Experience, Second-generation Montanist Oracles, and many more. Contributions in English, French and German.
